Children's Theater Classes Offered at the Poncan Theatre
The
Poncan Theatre has announced the first classes and recital of
the newly formed Evans Children's Academy of Performing Arts.
Classes are being offered for children in second through eighth
grades.
Classes will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from
Sept. 22 through Oct. 16. A recital will be held on the evening
of October 16.
The theme of the classes is Let's Put on a Show. Both classes
will create original productions to perform at the recital.
Professional theater director Nick Sweet will conduct both
classes as well as direct the recital. Sweet is an associate
member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.
Sweet has a long and impressive history in teaching children's
theater including residencies with the Bartlesville elementary
schools every year from 1992 through this school year. Other
accomplishments in the area of children's theater include
Ardmore elementary schools residencies from 1999 through 2004,
Take Two Alternative Academy in Ardmore residencies from 1997
through 2005, Frontier Public Schools residencies in 1993 and
1995, and working with the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in a
residency program every year from 1987 to the present school
year.
In addition to teaching, Sweet also spends a good amount of time
directing plays throughout Oklahoma including a number of
productions over the years for the local community theater The
Ponca Playhouse.
"These classes are an exciting hands-on experience for children
wanting to get involved in acting, and creating for the theater,
says Dave May, Poncan Theatre executive director. "Both classes
will be focused on developing the children's skills in a
performance setting. The recital on the 16th will give the
children an opportunity to show off their talents in front of a
live audience."
"These are the first classes being offered by the Evans
Children's Academy of Performing Arts at the Poncan Theatre,"
May added. "I want to again thank Pat Evans for making this
opportunity available to the children and families of this area.
These classes will serve as an introduction to many great things
to come and the children involved in these classes will have
many more opportunities to learn and perform at the Poncan
Theatre."
Class size is limited to 30 children. Cost for the classes is
$60 per student which is only $5 per class and includes the
recital. Visa and Master Card are accepted. For more information
